Twitch is becoming a force in the marketing of video games. But you wouldn’t know that from looking at the September sales numbers. Of the top 10 best-selling games for the month, only Destiny and Super Mario Maker are currently logging top views on Twitch.

The release of seven new sports games, including NBA 2K16 and FIFA 16, propelled the genre to the forefront of the industry, the NPD Group revealed in its September report. According to the market researcher, the sports genre accounted for 32 percent of units sold and 39 percent of the revenue for the month.

NBA 2K16, which was released during the final days of September, took the number one spot, while Madden NFL 16, which was released in August, held strong in second place. Super Mario Maker for the Wii U was the only game released exclusively for a console to show up on the list. It took the number 6 spot.

All told, the U.S. consumer spent $1.01 billion on new games and hardware. That’s a drop of 9 percent from last year, but that doesn’t mean the gaming market has contracted. NPD’s numbers don’t include digital games, mobile games or the used market.

In a blog post last week, NPD analyst Liam Callahan said he is expecting the fourth quarter of the calendar year to be “a gift” for the video game industry as holiday sales drive growth across the board. He said 40 percent of the year’s sales typically happen between October and December.
